All-Ireland MHC B: Westmeath by a whisker

August 18, 2010

All-Ireland MHC B semi-final: Westmeath 1-12, Meath 1-10

Westmeath edged out neighbours Meath in a keenly constested ESB All-Ireland MHC B semi-final at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday.

When the sides clashed at Cusack Park, Mullingar in the first round of the Leinster MHC back in April, Westmeath eased to an 18-point win over Meath.

Although Westmeath led for most of the way, there was never more than four points between the sides.

At the end Meath’s James Kelly saw his goal attempt from a close range free diverted for a ’65’. Paddy Conneely’s subsequent effort to snatch victory for the home side was to no avail and Westmeath prevailed.

The scores were tied four times over the hour, but Westmeath were never headed and crucially posted the last two scores of the game, from Aonghus Clarke and Niall O’Brien in the 51st and 54th minutes respectively.

Meath moved centre-half-back Kelly to full-forward, as a last throw of the dice, but Westmeath held on. The home side also saw substitute William Harnan dismissed on receipt of two yellow cards in the latter stages.

David Gavin gave Westmeath an early lead but that was quickly countered by a well-worked point from Aaron Ennis.

When David Higgins pointed, Westmeath were 0-3 to 0-1 to the good 10 minutes in. Within four minutes the scores were tied again, 0-4 each, when Willie McGrath fired over from close range.

Westmeath’s goal arrived in the 20th minute when Clarke latched onto Shane Fagan’s long delivery and fired to the Meath net. Then Aaron Craig pointed and it was double scores, 1-5 to 0-4.

Two pointed Damien McGee frees halved the deficit, but similar scores from O’Brien earned Pat O’Brien’s charges some leeway.

Another pointed McGee free left Meath trailing by 0-7 to 1-7 at half-time. When Enda Kincaid registered from distance in the 34th minute Westmeath were four points clear again.

Meath’s best spell saw them gain parity by the 40th minute with McGee pointing from far out before Willie McGrath netted from close range after Shane Brennan’s point attempt hit a post.

Westmeath’s replied with points from Clarke (free) and O’Brien to gain the upper hand heading into the final quarter.

Points from Conneely and James Toher levelled matters for the fourth time, in the 50th minute. Meath were unable to hit the front as Westmeath did just enough to clinch a final spot.

Leinster U21HC A: Heffernan’s goals win it for Meath

Meath 4-13, Kildare 1-16: Neil Heffernan was the star turn with four goals as Meath claimed the Leinster Under 21 H A title with a win over holders Kildare that was more convincing than the scoreline suggests.

When the Trim lad bagged his fourth goal midway through the second-half the scoreboard read 4-10 to 0-10 and the outcome decided.

Kildare substitute Gavin Sutherland netted from a 60th minute free for what proved to be the final score of the game after Ciaran Joyce was deemed to have over-carried the sliotar.

While Heffernan took the scoring plaudits, he was assisted by eight team mates who posted 0-13 between them. All six forwards registered as did midfielders Keith Keogan and Mark O’Sullivan. Substitute Noel Fagan also got off the mark to leave it 4-13 to 0-15 after 58 minutes.

On the Kildare side full-forward Martin Fitzgerald put 0-6 to his name but only scored once from open play. Conor Kenny was the only one of the visitors’ starting 15 to put over more than a single score from play.

The three Kildare substitutes chalked up 1-4 between them with Leo Quinn (two) and Danny Butler adding to Sutherland’s efforts.     Kildare hit the front in the opening minute when Fitzgerald landed a ’65’. Meath responded positively with team captain Michael Dunne and his Dunboyne clubmate Alan Watters combining to set Heffernan’s first goal.

Meath were never subsequently reeled in and before the fifth minute elapsed Heffernan netted again and it was 2-2 to 0-2.

Kildare did their best to keep within striking distance of Kevin Dowd’s charges and Fitzgerald’s only point from play ignited a Lilywhite revival.   By the 29th minute they had halved the deficit while Meath ‘keeper Shane McGann had saved well from Fitzgerald during the opening period.

Substitute Quinn landed Kildare’s final score of the half before Heffernan got in for his third goal, in the 30th minute, and it was 3-5 to 0-8 at the break.

Meath were quickly into their stride from the restart with points from Anthony Healy, David Raleigh, Barry Slevin (free) and Mark O’Sullivan.   Two Fitzgerald points from from placed balls (a ’65’ and a free) temporarily halted the Meath gallop. In between those scores Keith Keoghan found the range from distance with a free.

Then came Heffernan’s fourth goal and provincial honours were in the bag for Meath.

Meath (players in bold from Kiltale) – S McGann; D Carty, M Dunne, W Mahady; A Watters, C Joyce, D Kennedy; K Keoghan (0-1,f), M O’Sullivan (0-1); A Healy (0-1), E Marsh (0-1), A Douglas (0-1); B Slevin (0-4, 3fs), N Heffernan (4-0), D Raleigh (0-3). Subs – N Fagan (0-1) for Heffernan (54), K Keena for Marsh (59).

Meath SHC: Kiltale 5-13, Rathmolyon 2-8

July 4, 2010

Kiltale got their Senior Championship ambitions back on track with a win against a strong Rathmolyon team in testing and breezy conditions in Boardsmill. Kiltale took the game to Rathmolyon in the first half, scoring 1-6 against the strong breeze. Kiltale had to work hard, though; three excellent first half points from Ian Douglas who played his best game of the year ensured kiltale were able to keep with Rathmolyon until they got to half time. In the second half Kiltale showed what they really were made of, and played exactly the way everyone knows they can, leaving Rathmolyon in their wake. Man of the Match accolades went to Douglas, though one could hardly pick a single performer from an outstanding Kiltale 15.

Final Score: Kiltale 5-13, Rathmolyon 2-8

Team – 1. Ollie Regan; 2. David Donoghue, 3. Padraig Donoghue, 4. Stephen White; 5. T.J Lynch, 6. John Donoghue, 7. Willie Mahaddy; 8. Damien Dixon, 9. David Kane; 10. Ian Douglas, 11. Stephen Donoghue, 12. Benny Dixon; 13. Peter Durnin, 14. Cathal Sheridan, 15. James Kelly.

Sub:  Padraig Kelly for David Kane

Scorers:
Peter Durnin 2-3, Cathal Sheridan 2-1, James Kelly 1-2, Ian Douglas 0-3, Stephen Donoghue 0-2, Damien Dixon 0-1, Padraig Kelly 0-1.
