Senior Hurling Championship: Kiltale v Killyon

June 19, 2009
Peter Durnin and county minor footballer Mark O’Sullivan shared scoring spoils as Kitale posted their first win in Group A of the Fox Bookmakers SHC at sunny Pairc Tailteann on Sunday.

Kiltale 2-16
Killyon 2-11

Durnin finished with seven points to his name, including four from placed balls, while O’Sullivan matched that with 1-4 from open play.

Killyon looked a beaten docket when trailing by 0-8 to 2-8 at the change of ends having played with the wind in the opening half. However, a brace of goals from substitute Leighton Massey offered them a slim chance of causing an upset.

Such an outcome didn’t appear likely as Kiltale were always in a position to respond when their ascendancy was threatened.

Killyon – who beat Na Fianna by 0-13 to 0-3 in the opening round at rain swept Longwood seven days earlier – briefly hit the front, 0-2 to 0-1, seven minutes hit when David Raleigh pointed from play.

An instant response saw John and Stephen Donoghue place O’Sullivan for the opening goal. Killyon remained in contention with a Ray Massey pointed free from deep inside his own half leaving it 0-4 to 1-2 at the end of the opening quarter.

Durnin chipped in with a brace of points from play as Kitale – losers by 2-5 to 3-12 against Dunboyne first time out – kicked on and were 2-8 to 0-7 to the good when Phillip Garvey fired to the net in the 26th minute.

A point from Ray Massey – Killyon’s best performer on the day – wrapped up the scoring before the change of ends.

Substitute Massey made a quick impact with a 33rd minute goal but minor scores from Cathal Sheridan and Phillip Garvey soon left five points between the teams.

A brace of O’Sullivan points were the central features of Kiltale’s next scoring charge. Despite a fine Ray Massey effort from play, Killyon trailed by seven points, 1-10 to 2-15, with just over ten minutes left.

Some defensive slackness allowed Leighton Massey in for his second goal and soon the deficit was down to four points, 2-11 to 2-15.

That was as good as it got for Killyon who couldn’t find scores from play with the same facility as their opponents.

Kiltale – O. Regan; A. Donnelly, S. Carroll, D. Donoghue; Paul Garvey, P. Donoghue, S. Reilly; W. Mahady, B. Dixon; P. Durnin (0-7, 4 frees, 1 65), J. Donoghue, S. Donoghue; M. O’Sullivan (1-4, 0-1 free), C. Sheridan (0-2), Phillip Garvey (1-3). Subs – D. Dixon for B. Dixon (36 mins), P. Rispin for S. Donoghue (46 mins), S. Donoghue for P. Rispin (55 mins).
