Kiltale amongst the first official GAA Healthy Clubs to receive national recognition

November 11, 2017

A special ceremony with governmental representation in Croke Park has seen 58 GAA clubs recognised as the first official ‘Healthy Clubs’ on the island of Ireland.

Twenty Leinster clubs, including Kiltale Hurling & Camogie Club, can now proudly fly a flag above their grounds (endorsed by both Healthy Ireland and the Public Health Agency in NI), letting their members and communities know that they value health and wellbeing as much as leagues and championships.

In January 2016, almost 100 clubs applied to participate in Phase 2 of the project (just 16 participated in Phase 1 between 2013-2015). Many cited the dearth of services in their communities that are tackling issues such as obesity, sedentary lifestyles, mental health and suicide. They wanted to be part of the solution.

Clubs engage with their members and community before identifying health themes upon which to focus on. Most common include healthy eating; physical activity for non-playing members; emotional wellbeing; engaging older members of the community; youth development; gambling, drug, and alcohol education; and inclusion and integration. Almost half of the clubs (29) also opted to become completely smoke-free venues as part of their 18-month journey.

Progressive GAA clubs, St Colmcilles and Kiltale are the first clubs in Meath to receive national recognition. Their various health and wellbeing initiatives have had a tremendous impact on their clubs and wider communities. Kiltale Hurling & Camogie Club’s ‘Operation Transformation’ is a 6-week physical activity and fitness initiative aimed at increasing health awareness and helping the community to become a healthier place. It is aimed at both men and women who would like to get active, lose weight, be part of a group, tone up, improve sleep, increase energy levels, and above all have fun and enjoy the walks. Participants are offered a schedule off weekly exercise classes, confidential weigh ins to monitor progress, alongside guest speakers who support the participants on their fitness journey.

Former Tyrone football captain Seán Cavanagh is a big supporter of the GAA’s Healthy Club Project (HCP) and presented the clubs with their official flag and plaque in Croke Park on Saturday, November 4th. He said “I’ve seen myself how the GAA brings communities together in so many different ways so it’s fantastic to see the association taking a leadership role in developing healthier communities. The Healthy Clubs around the country are having a positive impact on so many children and young people and as a parent I think it is fantastic. Through this project I think people will start to appreciate the role of the GAA in our communities even more.”

The innovative Healthy Club model was developed in partnership with Healthy Ireland, the HSE’s health promotion division, the National Office for Suicide Prevention, and is supported by Irish Life through a CSR investment. In an era of unprecedented societal health challenges, the Healthy Club Project aims to harness the potential of the GAA club setting to deliver evidence-based health promotion information and interventions, backed up by appropriate policies and partnerships. Its potential to be replicated by other sports is currently being explored by a working group involving the FAI, IRFU, and Athletics Ireland.

Similar work is being undertaken across European sports associations, and for the past three years the GAA has contributed its learnings to the EU-wide Sports Clubs for Health project. This culminated with the GAA’s Community & Health manager, Colin Regan, presenting on the Healthy Club project to a sub-committee of the EU Parliament in Brussels in April.

The Healthy Clubs project is being independently evaluated by a team from Waterford IT’s Centre for Health Behaviour Research. While the final report into Phase 2 won’t be available until December, the research team have already noted significant successes (see editor’s notes for examples of successful interventions).

Aogán Ó Fearghail, An Uachtarán Cumann Luthchleas Gael said, “The 58 Healthy Clubs recognised today have gone above and beyond what is normally expected of a sports club. Health and wellbeing is core to what the GAA is all about and these clubs help bring that to life. I’d like to thank our partners, Healthy Ireland, the HSE, National Office for Suicide Prevention, the Public Health Agency, and Irish Life, for helping to make the Healthy Club project the success it is. We look forward to growing it from strength to strength.”

Recognising the achievements of the clubs in Croke Park at the Healthy Club Recognition Event is Catherine Byrne, Minister of State for Health Promotion and the National Drugs Strategy, Department of Health (ROI). She said, “Today is all about recognition for the clubs and the volunteers who make this happen at club level. I would like to congratulate all of the clubs and volunteers involved and acknowledge the contribution that they are all making to bring the vision for Healthy Ireland to life: where everyone can enjoy physical and mental health and wellbeing to their full potential.”

David Harney, CEO, Irish Life said, “Irish Life are delighted to work with the GAA on the Healthy Club initiative. The GAA, reaches into every community on the island of Ireland, and has a significant role to play in the health of the nation through its promotion of Gaelic Games. The association’s Healthy Club initiative brings a new dimension to this work. It enables people to access health in an exciting new way. We believe this work has the potential to improve the future health of communities across the country.”

There are numerous benefits to clubs that take part in the GAA HCP including exclusive access to Healthy Club resources and support. The independent evaluation by Waterford IT’s Centre for Health Behaviour Research of Phase 1 of the HCP revealed its potential to increase membership, improvements in health promoting activities, better opportunity to link the local community with club activities and opening up new funding avenues all the while enhancing the health of the nation and ensuring a healthier future for everyone.

The GAA hope to extend the project to 150 clubs in Phase 3 (with expressions of interest to open in early 2018) before opening the project to all interested clubs in 2020. There are 1,600 clubs in Ireland and over 400 abroad.

Leinster Club IHC: Kiltale prevail at a price

Kiltale (Meath) ……….. 1-22
The Harps (Laois) …… 1-15

Kiltale (Meath) proved too good for The Harps (Laois) in this quarter-final fixture at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday afternoon but the win had its price.

The Meath SHC champions lost Mark O’Sullivan to a straight red card in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the game following an incident that also involved two Harps’ players. It bemused those on both sides.

That harsh note means that the wing-forward is set to miss the semi-final clash with Ballyragget (Kilkenny) on November 18 at a Meath venue.

Kiltale led all the way apart from the early minutes. Not for the first time in a hurling match, both sides scored more when playing against the elements.

Aside from the scoring exploits of Jack Regan (1-9), three important fetches near the end of the game by James Kelly – one on his own goal line – were memorable features of the win.

In addition the work rate of Peter Durnin and Anthony Forde (the latter especially so in the opening half) also caught the eye.

Padraig Delaney was The Harps main scoring threat but the Durrow-Cullahill outfit weren’t helped by seven first-half wides when playing into the town goal.

Within 30 seconds of resumption, The Laois IHC semi-finalists were boosted by a Brian Clancy goal. The full-forward beat Ollie Regan to Eoin Clancy’s delivery and the deficit was down to four points. The Kiltale netminder might have been more proactive in dealing with Clancy’s speculative effort.

By the 36th minute the gap was trimmed to a goal before Kiltale responded with five points in as many minutes to lead by 1-18 to 1-10.

While the elements subsided somewhat, The Harps made another effort to cut the gap. They got it down to five points in the 54th minute when sub Ross Young left it 1-20 to 1-15.

That score proved to the The Harps’ swansong before Peter Durnin (following the first of James Kelly’s catches) and Mark O’Sullivan closed the scoring.

With the backing of the wind and the sun, The Harps pointed twice in the opening three minues. Padraig Delaney’s free was followed by a John Brophy effort from play.

By the fifth minute the scores were tied for the only time in the first-half when Jack Regan (free) opened his account to go along with Cathal McCabe’s opener for the Meath SHC winners.

Kiltale upped a couple of gears with four scores on the spin. Gavin Comerford’s point from an acute angle temporarily halted Kiltale’s progress.

Then in the 15th minute James Kelly provided the assist for Regan to net at the hospital end to leave the board reading 1-6 to 0-3.

Kiltale shaded the second quarter by 0-5 to 0-4. However they led by eight points, 1-10 to 0-5, after 25 minutes when Regan pointed.

A Regan 65 completed Kiltale’s first-half tally. It was Conor Dunne – with his second pointed free from inside his own half – from close to his own 45 who left The Harps double scores in arrears at the break, 0-7 to 1-11.

Kiltale – Ollie Regan; Anthony Donnelly, Philip Garvey, Ciaran Ennis; Ronan Ryan, Stephen Donoghue, Conor Shirren; Anthony Forde (0-1), Padraig Kelly (0-2); James Kelly, Cathal McCabe (0-2), Mark O’Sullivan (0-3); Peter Durnin (0-2), Cillian O’Sullivan (0-3), Jack Regan (1-9, 0-6fs, 2 65s). Subs – Ross Ryan for Shirren (ht), Adam Murphy for Garvey (51), Eamon Ryan for P Kelly (60), John Donoghue for McCabe (62).

Meath SHC final: Kiltale show their worth

October 3, 2017
Kildalkey's Enda Fitzgerald with Cillian O'Sullivan Kiltale during the Meath SHC Final at Pairc Tailteann

Kildalkey’s Enda Fitzgerald with Cillian O’Sullivan Kiltale during the Meath SHC Final at Pairc Tailteann

Kiltale overcame a spirited Kildalkey to make it four-in-a-row SHC titles with a minimum margin win at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday afternoon.

Kiltale …….. 1-15

Kildalkey ….. 1-14

For the second year running the men in maroon claimed the Jubliee Cup by a single point.

Cathal Sheridan’s men put a sluggish first-half behind them to overcome determined opponents who looked set to claim the title for the first time since 2011, when they won their third on the spin.

Ultimately it was Peter Durnin’s excellent point – after he was re-introduced for the final minutes – in the second second of four minutes of added time that determined the outcome.

James Kelly collected the man-of-the-match award and he deserved it having scored three points from play to go along with excellent ball-carrying.

Kiltale were chasing the game until the final quarter when they capitalised on numerical advantage to become champions for the seventh time.

Kildalkey were in a strong position when they lost influential defender Mairtin Doran to a second yellow card near the end of the third quarter.

The scores were tied, 0-12 to the challengers 1-9, at the time. Johnny Greville’s men responded well to this immense setback.

Conor Kearney posted three points on the spin – two frees and one from inside his own half – to move 1-12 to 0-12 to the good.

Paul Fagan’s smart stop from sub Cillian O’Sullivan kept Kiltale at bay. Then, in the 52nd minute Mark O’Sullivan netted from Padraig Kelly’s sideline cut.

But Kildalkey weren’t giving up. Conor Kearney had them back in front by 55th minute, 1-13 to 1-12.

Sub Adam Murphy quickly tied the scores before Jack Regan restored Kiltale’s lead. When Paddy Conneely levelled matters in the 58th minute a second drawn outcome of the afternoon looked likely

The challengers hit the ground running, taking the game to the four-in-a-row chasing champions from the off. In contrast, Kiltale seemed somewhat flat.

Conor Kearney pointed from play before Padraig Kelly got Kiltale off the mark in the sixth minute. However, the men in maroon never regained parity in the first-half.

Bidding for their sixth title, Kildalkey kept Kiltale at bay with Luke Rickard moving them 0-4 to 0-2 clear midway through the half.

Kiltale recorded five wides during the first 15 minutes while Kildalkey received a tremendous boost early in the second quarter when Evan Fitzgerald lobbed Shane McGann from close range after MairtinA Doran and Padraig Keogh laid the foundations.

At one stage, the challengers were six points to the good. Luke Rickard posted the final score of the half for Kildalkey who led by 1-8 to 0-6 at the break.

A much improved Kiltale tore into the deficit from the resumption and by the 42nd minute the scores were tied for the first time when Mark O’Sullivan pointed with assistance from team captain Jack Regan.

The sides were level on three further occasions before Durnin’s decisive intervention.

Kiltale – Shane McGann; Anto Donnelly, Philip Garvey, Ciaran Ennis; Ronan Ryan, Stephen Donoghue, Conor Shirren; Anthony Forde, Padraig Kelly (0-2); James Kelly (0-3), Cathal McCabe, Mark O’Sullivan (1-2); Peter Durnin (0-1), Ross Ryan, Jack Regan (0-6, 4fs). Subs – Adam Murphy (0-1) for Durnin (24), Cillian O’Sullivan for R Ryan (40), Eamon Ryan for McCabe (48), Durnin for Forde (55),

Kildalkey – Paul Fagan; Padraig Geoghegan (C), Enda Fitzgerald, Mairtin Doran; Briain Kelly; Maurice Keogh, Padraig Keogh; Evan Fitzgerald (1-2), David Harmon; Luke Rickard (0-2), Sean Heavey (0-3, 2 sls), James McNally; Paddy Potterton, Conor Kearney (0-6, 3f), Gary Kelly. Subs – Paddy Conneely (0-1) for Kelly (40), Mark Healy for Maurice Keogh (54), Martin Healy for Fitzgerald (60)

Support the Clubhouse

We always have this note on our newsletter but please we ask all our parishioners to avail of our clubhouse facilities and help us keep it open. Call in for a sociable drink or coffee. It is available for functions/meetings if required.

The club house is a very important facility in our parish and always needs support.  Like other clubs we don’t want to know what it is to be without it. Contact Carmel Bennett at 086 3770763.

We appreciate your support and value the custom you all give.

  • Sunday 27th August – Mary O’Connor and Pat Kelly – from 8:30pm
  • Saturday 23rd August – Christy Dignam and Joe Jewell of Aslan – back by popular demand!
The last night Christy performed in the Clubhouse it was a very memorable night for him and a great night’s entertainment for those that attend. So get in fast for your ticket and don’t be disappointed – contact Carmel at 086 3770763.
  • A note of thanks to all those that supported the recently held Rod Steward Tribute night (on the 19th of August) held in the clubhouse by the Hurling Club.  With a great response we hope to have Rod back soon.  Again it will be a night held by the club to support the Clubhouse.  It is appreciated by all the support to both the hurling club and clubhouse and would continue to ask all to consider the clubhouse for a drink/coffee or a party.
