Club statement: 2018 Brendan Davis Cup

Kiltale face Kildalkey in a gripping semi-final of the 2016 Brendan Davis Cup.

Kiltale face Kildalkey in a gripping semi-final of the 2016 Brendan Davis Cup.

Kiltale Hurling Club wishes to make the following statement regarding the Brendan Davis Cup.

Our Club paid its entry fee at the start of the year to take part in Brendan Davis Cup, and it was accepted.

Meath GAA regulations were passed at the start of the year. Regulation 49 outlined that all senior and intermediate hurling clubs were eligible to take part in the Brendan Davis Cup in 2018.

The Meath CCC made a decision during the year that the winners of the Senior and Intermediate Championships, in football and hurling, would not be allowed to take part in the Davis Cup, Feis Cup, or other Cup competitions during 2018.

This decision was never voted through at a County Committee meeting, as would be required in Rule 3.19(d).

The hurling clubs affected by this would be the winners of the Senior and Intermediate Championships, who would not be known until the 7th October.

After winning the Meath SHC, Kiltale Hurling Club contacted the Meath CCC – verbally and through emails – requesting to be included to the Brendan Davis Cup, as other teams were pulling out and giving walkovers which we felt greatly discredited the competition and the man who the competition was in honour of, Brendan Davis.

At this point the competition was only at the quarter final stage. Kilmessan vs Ratoath had yet to play, with the winners facing Trim in the semi-final. On the other side of the draw, Kildalkey had already been placed in the final after a number of walkovers.

We could have easily been included on Kildalkey’s side and played them in the semi-final, as Trim had been introduced into the semi-final on the other side.

Our exclusion from the competition was questioned by our club at a hurling meeting in Dunganny. We got backing from the floor by other clubs who felt that we should have been included.

However despite these numerous attempts we had no success. The competition was been rushed along to the final stages so we were left with no option but to take our case to Leinster Council.

We also pointed out to Meath CCC that we had 32 players togged out for the county final, as well as an intermediate team. We had a full month between winning the Meath SHC (7th Oct) to our first game in the Leinster IHC (4th Nov), and needed games to play in between. We also argued that we had enough players to field teams even without placing extra strain on our stronger players.

The Leinster Council heard our case and found Meath CCC to be in breach of Regulation 49 and Rule 3.19(d).

They felt that we should have been allowed to enter a team as we had so many available players; because the competition Regulation 49 said the Cup was open to all Senior and Intermediate clubs; and because we had paid our entry fee.

They also stated that the only way the Meath CCC could change a competition structure during the year was to have it voted through at a County Committee meeting.

We wish to stress that the Leinster hearings committee did NOT make a decision that the 2018 Brendan Davis Cup be declared “null and void”.

Rather, under Regulation 49 and Rule 3.19(d), the Leinster Council simply directed that the Meath CCC decision to exclude Kiltale from the 2018 Brendan Davis Cup be annulled.

The decision regarding the running of the Brendan Davis Cup in 2018 would therefore continue to rest with Meath CCC, but Kiltale must be included.

Our Club feels that this cup, in honour of the great Brendan Davis, has been discredited from the start because of the timing of the competition, which resulted in teams having to pull out, and also the fact that the county’s Senior champions had been barred from entry.

Kiltale Hurling Club have been in contact with the Davis family outlining our disappointment on being excluded. We explained why we felt it was necessary to take our case to gain entry to a Cup in honour of a true hurling man.

SHC final: Kiltale complete drive for five

October 8, 2018

Not much room for Trim's Neil Heffernan as Philly Garvey, Iarla Hughes and Ronan Ryan close in during the Meath SHC final at Pairc Tailteann

Kiltale ……. 2-18
Trim ……… 0-14

Kiltale made it five SHC titles in a row when finishing with 10 points to spare over neighbours Trim in the decider on Sunday at Pairc Tailteann.

The final margin doesn’t reflect the opening 45 minutes. The scores were tied seven times before the three-quarter mark. From there to the end Kiltale outscored Trim by 1-8 to 0-1.

A Peter Durnin free broke the deadlock and the same player quickly doubled Kiltale’s lead from a free.

The Kiltale number 13 was prominent, having replaced Jack Regan towards the end of the third quarter.  Durnin finished with eight points to his credit.

His accuracy helped Kiltale out significantly. The champions totaled 10 wides, eight in the third quarter.

Just four points separated the sides, though momentum was with Kiltale, with 54 minutes gone. Then man-of-the-match Ronan Ryan sent in a long delivery that Ross Ryan finished from close range while on his knees.

In the time remaining sub Shane Lenehan became Kiltale’s seventh scorer as David Troy’s men secured possession of the Jubilee Cup for the ninth time.

Trim bidding to complete a hat-trick of titles, having lifted the JHC and MHC crowns earlier in the weekend, lined out without James Toher.

In the first-half, the underdogs had whatever assistance the squally wind offered. Two of their nominal frontline, Cian Lee and team captain Alan Douglas, operated in deep roles.

A Brian Dowling free pointed Trim into an early lead. It was soon cancelled out by a similar score from Kiltale’s number 15, Jack Regan.

A Diarmuid Higgins point from his own 65 put Trim in front. Scores were tied four times in the opening quarter. A Cathal McCabe effort from play moved the champions two points clear for the first time.

A Damian Magee point kept the challengers in touch. Cian Lee pointed from the stand side, about 45 metres out, to leave Trim just one point off the pace, 0-6 to 0-7 with 22 minutes gone.

Then came the moment of the half, a brilliant Charlie Ennis save from Cillian O’Sullivan. The sides were tied for the fifth time when Dowling sent over a 65, his fourth of the half with 25 minutes gone.

Trim outscored Kiltale by 0-2 to 0-1 in the final minutes of the half. Alan Douglas (free) and Neil Heffernan moved Neil Cole’s side two clear. Peter Durnin replied for the champions to leave David Troy’s men 0-8 to 0-9 in arrears, with elemental advantage to come.

Kiltale recorded no wides in the first-half while Trim had five.

However, Trim registered first on the resumption with Dowling sending over (free). When same player landed another free moments later Trim were 0-11 to 0-8 ahead.

Suspicions of overcarrying before the award were academic. Jack Regan landed his fifth free before Kiltale struck their first goal with James Kelly creating the opening for Cillian O’Sullivan to restord Kiltale’s lead, 1-9 to 0-11.

Two Dowling frees had Trim level twice before Kiltale found their scoring touch to pull clear.

Kiltale – Shane McGann; Iarla Hughes, Phillip Garvey (C), Brian O’Reilly; Stephen Donoghue, Ronan Ryan, Padraig Kelly; Anthony Forde (0-2), Cillian O’Sullivan (1-0); James Kelly, Cathal McCabe (0-2), Mark O’Sullivan; Peter Durnin (0-7, 5fs 1 65), Ross Ryan (1-1), Jack Regan (0-5 fs). Subs – Ferghal McCabe for Mark O’Sullivan (27),  Shane Lenehan (0-1) for Regan (43), Adam Murphy for J Kelly (57), Christopher Reilly for C O’Sullivan (59), Eamon Ryan for  S Donoghue (59)

  • The GAA season is nearing its climax – come and watch RTE and Sky Sports coverage of the hurling and football finales on our big screen!

– Check out The Clubhouse Facebook for Entertainment at weekends –

The clubhouse is a very important facility in our parish and always needs support. Like other clubs we don’t want to know what it is to be without it. Drop in for a drink or an ESSENCE Coffee or think about using the facility for a party or meeting.

We appreciate your support and value the custom you all give.
