Inter-county U21 ‘A’: Kiltale lads lose out after extra time

July 28, 2011

Westmeath captain Alan McGrath accepts the Leinster U21 A HC trophy from Leinster Council Chairman Martin Skelly

Leinster U21 ‘A’ Hurling Championship:
Westmeath 2-17, Meath 1-18

Westmeath came from four points down in the first period of extra-time to defeat neighbours Meath in a thrilling Leinster U21 ‘A’ HC final at Trim last night.

Having received a bye into the final, the visitors scored 1-3 without reply in the last eight minutes to deny the Royals victory. Cormac Boyle was Westmeath’s match-winner, accounting for 1-1 of that tally.

A goal from Barry O’Meara had handed Westmeath the early initiative before Meath fought back to go into the break on level terms, 0-9 to 1-6. The Lake County regained the lead in the second half, only for Meath’s top scorer Keith Keoghan to send the game to extra-time with an injury-time free (1-13 to 0-16).

When full forward Anthony Healy netted to give the Royals the lead for the first time at the end of the first period Westmeath looked to be in trouble, but Boyle’s heroics ensured them of victory.

Kiltale were ably represented by team captain Shane McGann in goal and Willy Mahady at centre-back, as well as Padraig Kelly who did not feature in the match, but sadly the home side were on the wrong side of the scoreline after an extra-time thriller.

Meath SHC: Kiltale 3-10, Kildalkey 3-9

All eyes on the ball as Kiltale's Willie Mahady closes in on Kildalkey's Derek Doran during the Meath SHC at Athboy.

A last minute point from Kiltale centre back and man of the match David Donoghue secured victory for Kiltale against current champions Kildalkey.

Kildalkey got off to great start with a goal from Derek Doran and they raced into a 5 point lead but some great fielding and 2 great points from James Kelly brought Kiltale back into the game.

Kiltale steadied the ship and David Donoghue and Anthony Donnelly started to dominate along the half back line and Mark O’ Sullivan and James Kelly were causing all sorts of trouble for the Kildalkey half back line.

Both sides were guilty of some bad misses during the game but two second half goals from Stephen White and one from a 21 yard free by Peter Durnin put Kiltale in the driving seat but Kildalkey responded with two goals to put them ahead by a point going into the closing minutes.

Philip Garvey and Mark O’Sullivan scored two great points and Fergus McMahon replied with a pointed free for Kildalkey.

Padraig Donoghue began to dominate on the Kiltale full back line and set up many attacks but honours went to his brother David who scored the all important winner.

Willie Mahady had a great battle with Derek Doran and got in some vital interceptions.

Kiltale had great performances from Stephen and John Donoghue around midfield and the Kiltale forwards fought hard for possession and took some great scores.

Padraig Kelly cleared up a lot of ball around the Kiltale half back line and James Kelly and Mark O’Sullivan were a constant threat and inside Durnin and Garvey got some great scores.

Kiltale: Shane McGann, David Kane, Padraig Donoghue, Willie Mahedy, Sean Dunleavy, Sean Dunleavy, David Donoghue 0-1, Anthony Donnelly, Padraig Kelly, Stephen Donoghue, Mark O’Sullivan 0-1, John Donoghue, James Kelly 0-2, Peter Durnin 1-4, Stephen White 2-0, Philip Garvey 0-2.

Meath SHC: Kiltale 4-15, Killyon 1-14

July 6, 2011

Kiltale's Padraig Donoghue closes in on Killyon's Killian Kanavan during the Meath SHC game at Pairc Tailteann.

Peter Durnin was in brilliant form for Kiltale as they overcame Killyon by ten points at a sunny Pairc Tailteann.

Dual star Mark O’Sullivan got the winners off the mark with a fine point. Kiltale held a 0-7 to 0-3 advantage after twenty minutes. The impressive Durnin struck for his first goal to leave it 1-7 to 0-3. Killyon then enjoyed their best period of the game. Three points from David Raleigh and two from Keith Keoghan put them in a good position before the break. Kiltale went in with a slender 1-9 to 0-9 lead.

The second half began in lively fashion when Mark O’Sullivan had a brilliant effort saved by Killyon keeper Stephen Quinn. Three points from Durnin and one from Stephen Donoghue left Kiltale with a 1-13 to 0-10 lead. Keith Keoghan gave Killyon a lifeline when his long range free found its way to the Kiltale net to leave it 1-13 to 1-11. But within three minutes Durnin had the sliothar in the Kiltale net twice and the game was as good as over. James Kelly put the icing on the cake with Kiltale’s fourth goal in the final minutes.

Best for the winners were goalkeeper Shane McGann, defenders Willie Mahady Padraig and David Donoghue, midfielder Stephen Donoghue and Philip Garvey, Mark O’Sullivan and Durnin in attack. Kilyon had good performances from Stephen Quinn, Brian Perry, Conor Foley, Keith Keoghan and the Raleigh brothers David and Thomas.
