Minor Championship Div 2 Round 1 – Match Report

August 29, 2020

Minor Championship Div 2 Round 1

Kiltale/Boardsmill 1-15

Dunderry 2-12

Due to Dunderry’s pitch being deemed unplayable this Rd 1 Minor clash was switched to Kiltale, and what a fantastic game of hurling these teams served up.

Kiltale had won the PJ Stenson trophy in 2019 and with the extra forces from Boardsmill are vying to make it two in a row.

Kiltale/Boardsmill took early command with points from Eoghan Frayne and Conor Quinn – a scoring trend from these two that was set to continue throughout the afternoon. Dunderry settled but trailed by 4 points to 2 coming up to the first water break – Sean Lynch and a Quinn free for Kiltale/Boardsmill taking the home side to their tally.

The water break was slightly later than scheduled and Dunderry took advantage with an expertly taken goal from Liam Rattigan which put the away side a point up.

Another Lynch point was followed quickly by a point from no. 11 Frayne that put Kiltale/Boardsmill ahead again briefly but an Evan Nolan point made it level soon after. Quinn and Jack Fagan traded points before the break to leave the sides level 0-07 to 1-04 at half time.

The early part of the second half belonged to the lads in black and white as they raced ahead through the excellent Evan Nolan and Fagan, Kiltale/Boardsmill responded with points from play from Frayne and midfielder Daragh McVann.

However there was a pivitol moment 10 mins into the second half when Kiltale/Boardsmill claimed Charlie McCormack was fouled but the referee waved play on and Martin Coffey took full advantage to rattle to the net putting Dunderry in control once more and they went in 4 points up at the second water break and feeling in control.

It was all set up to be a tense last quarter and so it proved, three Quinn points (2 frees) closed the gap but points from Ross O’Brien and Niall Darcy kept Dunderry in charge. At this stage Dunderry were still in control, 4 points up with 5 minutes left. A fantastic diving save to his right by Liam Boyle kept the home side in the game at this stage, cleared up by his excellent full-back Sean McKenna who was faultless all afternoon.

Kiltale/Boardsmill started to put some long balls into full forward Noah Lacey O’Dea and the tactic paid off with 3 minutes of normal time left when the ball dropped to the no.14 and he struck low to the net – one point game.

As tensions ran high Kiltale/Boardsmill were awarded a free which Frayne slotted over under pressure to tie the game, but the drama wasn’t over. The referee played 7 minutes injury time, and either side could have got the winner, Dunderry got two difficult frees in this time but failed to convert.

There has been nothing between these sides since they started playing Go Games against one another some 10 years ago and again they were inseperable in this thriller today.

There will now be a toss of a coin to see who faces Wolfe Tones in the second round with the other side awaiting to play th North Meath side in the final game.

Dunderry – With the Intermediate Hurling side having a disappointing Championship this year, it would be a massive boost for the small ball game in the parish if their Minors were to go on a good run in the MHC.  Their form in the Minor Hurling League was encouraging and they have a home semi-final to look forward to when it resumes in the coming months.  In Mark Nolan they have a shrewd operator on the sideline and with him in charge the team will be very well set up.

County Minor panellist Jack Fagan leads the team as captain and along with the Coogan’s (Cian and Liam), he will be the driving force behind their ambitions to land the PJ Stenson Cup.  Their opening round game against Kiltale/Boardsmill will be crucial and if the League form holds through then Dunderry will be confident of victory but Kiltale are likely to have improved significantly from the form they showed back in February and March.

Manager – Mark Nolan.  Selectors – Matthew Duffy & Paddy Darcy.  Captain – Jack Fagan.

Kiltale/Boardsmill – Kiltale won the PJ Stenson Cup twelve months ago and this year they go in search of another success combined with Boardsmill.  The Spring League was something of a disappointment for the team, but they have regrouped post lockdown and come into the Championship confident that they have turned a corner and are now on an upward curve.  This is a difficult group and it will come as no surprise if the teams end up with a win apiece meaning score difference comes into play.

How they ultimately fare could depend on who lines out and if Eoghan Frayne steps across the white line on Saturday then Kiltale/Boardsmill will have one of the best free takers at his age grade in the county amongst their ranks. The dual player showed his ability in that Division 2 Final last year and he could have a busy few weeks ahead with Summerhill in contention for the Division 1 honours in the football.  Others who are likely to be key for the combination outfit are Charlie McCormack, Sean McKenna & Conor Quinn.

Manager – Anthony Quinn.  Selector – Francis Cotter, Kevin McKenna & Tomás Boyle.  Captain – Sean McKenna

Wolfe Tones – It is brilliant to see Wolfe Tones fielding in the Minor Hurling Championship on their own two feet after a long time combined with Navan O’Mahonys and they come into the Championship fancied by many to make it a historic season by going on and winning it outright.  There is excellent work being done in the club promoting hurling and seeing them field a Minor side on their own is testament to this.

County Minor panellist Eoin Donegan is a big player for them, and his strength and power is likely to be deployed around the centre of the field.  If he can help form a platform for the team in the middle third then the ‘Tones will be well on the way to challenging for honours, especially if the likes of Ciaran O’Dea and Thomas Donegan can reach their potential.

Manager – Alan Connell.  Selector – Ken Boyd.  Captain – Eoin Donegan.

2019 Winner – Kiltale

Playing For – PJ Stenson Cup

Predicted finalists – Clann na nGael & Kiltale/Boardsmill

Predicted winners – Clann na nGael

Club Update

August 16, 2020

More excellent work undertaken at the weekend at the pitches, as well as the old nets at the far end of the main pitch being removed (new nets going up in next couple of weeks) the tree stumps which were there were also completely removed by Brian Reilly.

Unfortunately the Clubhouse remains closed however we’re using the opportunity to give the place a face-lift. We’ll keep that as a surprise for the moment but we think you’ll like the new look when we eventually open the doors again!

Also, the juvenile pitch is now marked and setup for the underage groups including permanent goalposts at both ends.
In future there will be no parking on this pitch, we will be using along the wall and behind the trees/far goals of the new juvenile pitch for cars.

Image may contain: grass, outdoor and nature

Watch out too for new signage going up shortly.

To all that continue to assist the club in whatever way, we are most grateful.
Our ground has 2 adult pitches and 1 juvenile, walking/running track, dressing rooms, new toilet facilities and clubhouse that all need to be maintained.
Work like that done at the weekend and pitch cutting during the week is done by our volunteers who continue to alleviate the costs and we are indebted to them, however some costs are incurred.

We remind you that our club lotto is presently our only way to financially support the club. Our expenses include loan repayments, county board payments and upkeep and maintenance. We’ve had a lot more games than usual recently and it’s great to hear the compliments about our grounds we’ve received coming from other clubs.

Continue please to play our club lotto and play responsibly – https://play.clubforce.com/play_newa.asp…

The club fundraiser in May assisted hugely for our 2020 affiliation, COVID requirements (new signage, hand sanitisers etc) and other payments as outlined above.

We’d also like to thank our sponsors, in the present climate it is not easy for companies so thank you all.
We’ll be selling more advertising space shortly as well, details soon.

For the members, committee, parents, teams and mentors you have all been responsible with COVID and we thank you and ask you all to continue to adhere to all requirements. Complete Healthy Declaration before training or games. Wash hands – Sanitise hands on entry and exit – Keep you distance – keep contact tracing list – keep to time slot for training – don’t hang around- respect all others and we should be safe.
If you feel unwell at anytime don’t go to pitch or training or games. COVID is not a disease it is a virus which effects all differently. Be honest to yourself, your family, colleagues if you are unwell and any COVID symptoms – isolate – ring GP and inform those concerned your not feeling well. This is about trust/honesty there should be no stigma if you contract it.

Thank you
Kiltale Hurling Club Committee
